if you really think about it, we never saw 8 regenerate. we have no idea how he died. what i am betting on is that John Hurt is just an older version of 8, because the Great Time War did occur between the end of the 90’s movie and the 2005 reboot.

if you think about it from a corporation’s perspective, Doctor Who is bringing a crapton of revenue to the BBC. it is an internationally popular television show that brings in millions of loyal viewers a week. if they stick with cannon and give the doctor 13 “lives”, that would mean that there is only two more doctors left, the 12th and the 13th. by making John Hurt the “secret” 9th doctor, that would actually make Matt Smith the 12th doctor, meaning that once Matt Smith regenerates, that will be the final doctor.

from a greedy, money standpoint, i don’t think they will do that. by making John Hurt the “real 9th doctor”, it shaves off at least 3 more years that they could be making money in the future off of this show. without that extra regeneration for the future, it means that the show will end that much sooner, and i don’t think the BBC would be willing to threaten one of their most profitable projects just for a tv special, even with it being the 50th.
